Rising Stars Program for girls

True North is launching a summer bridge program called the “Rising Stars Summer Experience” to support eighth grade girls who will be entering High School in the fall. The importance of a smooth transition from eighth grade to ninth grade cannot be emphasized enough, as this transition will determine a student’s success in high school as well as decisions about their post-secondary life.

This summer in specially-designed workshops and activities, girls will build leadership skills, focus on communication, decision making, collaboration, conflict resolution, problem solving, and learn ways to discover their passions and goals.

Rising Stars first field trip will take them to Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, for a special tour of the campus, lunch in the cafeteria, and an introduction to what a college-prep curriculum entails. Research shows that most Middle School students don’t know what courses they need to graduate from High School, let alone be prepared for college. As Freshman, they will be better equipped to deal with the increased academic demands if they know ahead of time what the environment will be like and what will be expected of them.

Rising Stars will explore different sorts of careers in which the girls have shown interest and introduce them to women who have achieved success in those fields. Each month the girls will read a book specially chosen for them and participate in a group book club discussion. Cooking classes, rock climbing, and camping are also on the summer agenda.

AJ Crocker will be leading the group with assistance from the True North Staff and other adult volunteer Navigators.
